Covestro, Jowat and Henkel developed a polyurethane dispersion adhesive (PUD) with a biobased content of more than 50% in a joint project.

From a purely technical perspective, they can replace traditional adhesives in wood, furniture, and automotive applications without major modifications. Solvent-free waterborne polyurethane dispersions (PUD) are used as adhesives in many products. They are composed of urethane and polyester polyol components.

In this project, the researchers successfully produced polyester polyols based on renewable raw materials: succinic acid, sebacic acid, 1,3-propanediol and 1,4-butanediol are suitable monomers. The PUD adhesive produced in this way has a total bio-carbon content of more than 50% and has technical characteristics close to the market standards in wood, furniture and automotive applications. However, bio-based footwear adhesives still need to be optimized.

Within the framework of the cooperation project, polyester can even be used as an example to demonstrate that bio-based production has reached production scale. "The only obstacle to commercial implementation is the cost of raw materials. The current prices of bio-based chemicals are even higher than fossil chemicals. However, in the medium term, these prices may converge," said Dr. Martin Melchiors, the project leader. Covestro.

Then there will be a good market opportunity, because bio-adhesives also have advantages in climate protection, as the calculations of the Fraunhofer Institute for Environment, Safety and Energy Technology (UMSICHT) show: According to this, bio-based PUD has a carbon dioxide footprint reduced by more than 25% compared to traditional fossil-based PUD.

European Coatings will host the 2nd Bio-based Coatings and Coating Raw Materials Conference on October 23, 2019.

This book teaches the formulation of adhesives and sealants in two steps. Each section first describes the application and chemical basis of the relevant adhesive or sealant type. Followed by formula recommendations and, if possible, analysis of existing formulas. The analysis includes the calculation of important characteristic values of the recipe. All calculations based on formulas and formulas are completed step by step, so beginners should also be able to understand.
